Who We Are and How This Travel Guide Came About

¡Hola! My name is Christian, and I’m from beautiful, albeit quite often cold, Graz in Austria. I’m a mechanical engineer and a self-taught web designer with an innate longing for long-term travel to warm, faraway countries. This passion brought Margit and me to Mexico for the first time in 2003. A year later, a friend’s recommendation led us to Isla Holbox, which was still completely unknown at the time.

Despite the hotel’s organized transfer from the airport to the accommodation, the journey from Europe to the island was an exhausting odyssey. But it was worth it because, as my friend promised, virtually nothing was happening on the island. Apart from miles of dreamy beaches, sandy roads with large puddles, and rattling golf carts, there were only a few small hotels, cute restaurants, and tiny stores with hardly anything to buy. The best part? Almost no tourists! It was love at first sight, and it was the most relaxing vacation I had ever experienced. So, it was clear that Holbox had to be the destination again the following year.

Over the next 20 years, we had wonderful experiences getting to know the language, country, and people, and we made many friends. However, there were also some experiences that we would have gladly done without during our long-awaited vacation. These included hurricanes, flight delays, missed ferries, wandering the Yucatán Peninsula, injuries, and last but not least, the Coronavirus pandemic. However, none of these inconveniences stopped us from coming back again and again.

Why We Created This Website

We created this travel guide with the support of numerous friends from Holbox to make it easier for you to plan your vacation and give you a realistic impression of what to expect here right from the start. We hope our information and tips help you have a great vacation in Holbox and prepare you for any unexpected situations.
