The offer of activities, excursions and tours on Isla Holbox itself is already enough for a few weeks of vacation. However, if you want to see more of Yucatán or other places in Mexico, the most you will find on Holbox Island is a day trip to visit the Mayan pyramids in Chichén Itzá. After all, Holbox is a remote island which makes the journey to and from these places of worship much longer.

Sightseeing Places on the Yucatán Peninsula

Still, it would be a shame to miss out on the spectacular sights of the Yucatán Peninsula. Just a few of the many recommended places for sightseeing are:

  • Pyramids at Chichén Itzá
  • Las Coloradas in Ría Lagartos Natural Park
  • Temple complex in Uxmal
  • Ruins of Coba
  • City tour in Valladolid
  • Cenote Ik Kil, Chaak Tun, Azul
  • City tour in Mérida
  • Ruins in Ek Balam
  • Temple complex in Tulum
  • Water park Xcaret, Xel-Ha, Xplor
  • Isla Mujeres
  • Cozumel

In most cases, you are well advised to combine your stay in Holbox with a round trip or to spend a few days in another place that is more convenient for more distant excursions. Recommended starting points are Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum. These are the largest tourist areas on the Riviera Maya, but the range of organized excursions and tours is enormous and the quality and prices are also right, so you can’t go far wrong.

A little more exciting is to take a rental car and plan a tour on your own. As long as you follow a few simple rules to follow here in Mexico, this is actually a very good way to explore this amazing country and its sights.
